Why the Model Isn't the Problem — Your Prompt Is

The most common complaint about AI writing tools is some variation of "the output doesn't sound like me" or "it's too generic." Both complaints are accurate. Both are also entirely addressable. The model is not failing. The prompt is underspecified.

A language model has no default sense of your voice, your audience, or your editorial standards.

Without explicit instruction, it defaults to a statistical average of plausible business writing — which is to say, it sounds like everyone and no one. The founders who get output that sounds like them are the ones who tell the model, in explicit detail, who they are and what they sound like.

The solution is a voice document: a 300 to 500 word brief that describes your writing in the same way a brand style guide describes a visual identity. Sentence length. Vocabulary preferences. What you never say. The emotion you want the reader to feel. How you typically open an article. What your call-to-action philosophy is. Load that document into every prompt and the output shifts immediately.

It's not magic. It's specification. The model is a mirror. Show it something specific and it reflects something specific back. Show it nothing and you get the average of everything it's ever read. The output quality gap between the founders who understand this and those who don't is enormous and growing.
